Important Reseller Technical Advisory for .CA Domains
We are excited to announce some changes to the way .CA domains are handled through the eNom API that will make it easier to register, transfer, and update contacts on .CA domain names.
Please see the dates included in this email so that you can plan to make the necessary changes to your API implementation.
If you are currently selling .CA via the API and do not update by October 12, 2010 all .CA registrations and transfers will fail.
What is changing with .CA
CIRA, the company that manages the .CA TLD is transitioning from the current manual management system to EPP, the same standard used by the most popular TLDs including .COM, .ORG and .US.
As part of these changes, registrants of .CA domains must accept CIRA’s Terms and Agreement upon registration and when changing contacts instead of managing a separate login through CIRA’s site.
Transfers will use the automated EPP auth code system instead of the current manual process involving messages between CIRA and the registrant.
This means that transfers, registrations, and contact updates will be done faster and easier than ever before.
What this means for resellers
There will be a few revisions to the API as a result of these changes. They are summarized below:
- Resellers must display CIRA’s Terms and Agreement and have it approved by end users when they register .CA domain names.
- Transfer commands will be modified to accept EPP keys for .CA domains.
- Registrant updates can be made without doing a Trade and can be done without incurring extra charges. Registrants can now make these changes through your site; they no longer log into CIRA’s web site.
There is no need to inform your sub-reseller accounts, as we will be handling the communication where it pertains to our API.
Failure to update your site will result in failed .CA registrations and transfers.
If you are an Instant Reseller user, all changes will be implemented automatically on your Instant Reseller site and no action is required. We will notify sub-resellers of these changes on your behalf.
Timeline for implementation
- 9/8/2010: Updated API documentation detailing the changes will be available here (NOTE: you need to be logged in to see this page).
- 9/13/2010: Changes live on API test environment.
- 10/12/2010: Changes live on API production environment.

.CO Tips and Tricks
It's been 9 days since the .CO General Availability launch, and there have already been over 350,000 .CO registrations. Compare that to .ME, which recently reached 400,000 after two years of operation. It's clear that there is a huge demand for .CO, and that this new TLD is poised to become a mainstay on today's Web.
We've made it as easy as possible for our resellers to get in on the action. We incorporated .CO into our API in the simplest way possible, by treating it the same way as .COM. What that means is that if you can register a .COM domain right now, you are ready to sell .CO. Just specify the TLD as CO in your Purchase or InsertNewOrder/AddToCart commands and you're set! If you're using Instant Reseller it's even easier, .CO is enabled automatically and all of your customers can purchase it right now!
But if you really want to see your .CO registrations increase, you will want to position .CO on your site so your customers can easily find it and register it. Here are some things we do on our own sites that can lead to more .CO registrations for you:
- Place a prominent banner on your homepage for .CO to encourage customers to learn more.
- Put .CO near the front of domain search results when your customers look for a domain.
- Reach out to your customers through email and tell them about .CO.
- Take advantage of the ease of selling .CO through eNom - if you can sell .COM, you can sell .CO!
- Target customers with long or convoluted .COM domains or a lot of ccTLD registrations.
- Leverage existing marketing materials made available to you to save time and money promoting .CO.

eNom Announces the Launch of .CO Domains to All Resellers at HostingCon 2010
